Turning Point Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition
Call for Submissions
May 8th-31st, 2008

Selected sculptures will be on display during Art Detroit Now and will be placed outside around 555 Gallery and Studios' building visible along Grand River Ave. and Warren Ave., located at the southwest entrance of the historic Woodbridge Neighborhood minutes from Downtown Detroit and the Midtown Cultural District.

  Specifications:

• Sculpture design should be original. Artists may work alone or in groups.
• Recognizing the public installation nature of its display, sculptures must be sturdily constructed. Consider safety features to protect the public i.e. no rough or pointed edges, etc. Entries will be reviewed by a structural engineer.
• Design must include an anchor mechanism for securing to a cement base-WHICH WILL BE PROVIDED TO YOU ON SITE AT NO COST.
• Suitable for outdoor exposure over an extended period, i.e. be "weatherproof."
• Once accepted the design may not be significantly changed without the written agreement of the Outdoor Sculpture Committee.

Press/Play

Press/Play is the first of six experimental broadcasts of 24 local, national, and international artists exhibiting a five-minute presentation of what is currently happening within his or her art community. The presentations will be projected to an audience of artists and art supports live via Skype, an internet videoconferencing system. The first event will be exhibited at 555 Gallery and Studios in Detroit. The Press/Play events will broadcast every other month for one year. Each will concentrate on individual themes within the arts.

This broadcast will be heavily recorded by professional volunteers, all of the documentation will be used to create 200 pressed records, 200 screen-printed newspapers, and a website. The website and newspaper will provide further detail of each artist representative and all topics brought to attention within the five minute presentation. Currently awaiting approval of a grant to fund this; if successful each volunteer will be rewarded with a documented piece of this event.

The requirements for each artist involved:

•    You must have access to the internet from 6pm - 8pm est. on May 10th 2008
•    You must have a Skype account, which can be downloaded free from skype.com
•    Prepare to communicate to an audience in Detroit through Skype for five minutes
•    Discuss what is happening within the art community of your city
