The 555 Residency Program helps facilitate a working environment that encourages the exchange of ideas between local art practitioners and visiting artists as well as experimentation with new materials and concepts. Visiting artists are encouraged to develop projects in response to their new working environment, and to explore the city of Detroit’s many resources. The program includes participation in the 555 Education and Outreach program and concludes with a one month exhibition of the work created.

The three main aspects of the 555 residency are:

1. Exchange- 555 Residency Program provides visiting artists with the opportunity to work within a group of Detroit based artists whose practices vary from painting and sculpture to installation, photography, video, and fashion design. Visiting artists are encouraged to make links with other arts organizations, artists, and arts professionals in Detroit as a means of establishing an exchange of ideas through practice.  Residency Participants must work 4 hours per week for 555-projects may vary from administrative to maintenance to construction

2. Educational Outreach- This may include slide lectures, panel discussions, educational workshops and outreach projects. This component of the program will vary according to the expertise and interests of the artist. Artists are also in a position to benefit from the educational resources that Detroit has to offer. These may include access to facilities such as libraries and collections as well as artists’ discussions, lectures, and training.
(1) 6-12 hour Workshop or (1) Artist's talk and demonstration.

3. Exhibitions- The culmination of the program is an exhibition of the artist’s work produced during their time in Detroit. Exhibitions run three weeks and offer an opportunity for audiences to see local, national, and international work. Open studio times are also encouraged.
The 555 organization will assist the artist in promoting and organizing the above events.
